after an exciting vacation. I must admit that there were some serious low moments too, thanks to chennai traffic and driving conditions. Anybody who is planning to buy a new car beware of those ruthless / reckless lorry, bus and van drivers. This topic however deserves a seperate post.
While I was home I wanted to get this BSNL dataone broadband up and running. To my surprise the application process was fairly straight forward, I think this the first time in the history of BSNL that a service was provided without any paper work.
This was what I did, went online to bsnl chennai website and submitted the application for dataone home 250 plan. The plan provides 256kbps (barely broadband) connection with a monthly traffic limit of 400 mb for Rs. 250. Which is great considering the fact that dialup 56kbps actually costs more. For 2 weeks we didn't hear from the BSNL folks, third week when we checked with them at the exchange they tell us that the service has already been comissioned. Now then, how do we use the service ? no manuals no installation kit nothing.. when questioned the JE at the exchange says that he doesn't know how to install the service if the modem is not purchased from them. I was trying to use an ADSL modem that touchtel provided few years back.
Did some googling but didn't get any conclusive result. After some struggle by trying out different combinations managed to get the broadband connection up and running. Strangely no one on the internet had provided any kind of specific help on how to use the beetel (globespanvirata chpset) ADSL modem provided by touchtel for BSNL dataone. Anyways, here is the configuration that works for me :
vpi 0
vci 35
encapsulation : RFC 2516 PPPOE Encapsulation
Modulation : T1.413 or Multimodes
Make sure you also get the User/Pass from BSNL
As usual BSNL does not even have a compatible list of modems that can be used for dataone. There are some rumours out there on the internet which says only ADSL2 modems work for dataone. The Beetel (globespanvirata chpset) with TERA 100U printed on the rear of the modem does work perfectly for BSNL dataone.
