Frozen Hard Disk

Few weeks back my HD started to act crazy. It actually gave me enough time to backup important stuff. But, I wouldn't listen to its relentless clicking call, one day it stopped clicking and the silence surrounded me in horror. The one backup I took few months back was in India; too far from here for me to be comfortable. I tried giving it a few friendly pats, then gently dropped it on the floor, another friendly kick and even a form of CPR, nothing worked, the HD just laid there as still as the VGP golden beach statue man. Whenever I plugged the HD in and switched the power on I could hear the motor spinning wildly out of control and the screen would show the archaic "Non System or System Disk error" message. I have been seeing this message since 1993, shows that our BIOS software badly needs an extreme makeover.

I frantically searched the internet; didn't get me anywhere. Finally, landed on a piece of information which said freezing the HD might work. So, I mustered all my courage and placed the slim and small 2.5" contrapment in the freezer.

I let it freeze for 30 minutes, when I took it out it was all wet, condensation at it's best ! all the wiping I did went in vain, for a moment I thought by freezing the HD I made matters worse. I was worried if the moisture in the HD would create a short cicuit that could turn my notebook into a footrest.

Anyways, once again I mustered all my courage and plugged the HD in.......

want to know what happend ?

  • Phew ! finally someone asked. Voila, it worked. In fact it seems to work better now. Every 8/10 hours I shut my laptop down for 30 mins for it to get back to room temp. The H/D works like a charm now :-) One thing I didn't mention, when u freeze it, put it in a air tight zip lock bag, that we you can avoid condesation to some extent.
